History

The story of  Ulun Danu Temple in Beratan  is known from the archaeological and historical data contained in the chronicle of Mengwi ancient codex called Lontar. At the left side of the front of the Uun Danu Temple, there is a sarcophagus and a stone board that comes from tradition megalithic period, around 500 Before Common Era. Those artifacts  are now placed above of their each Babaturan or terrace  used as a place for  ritual performing  since the in ancient megalithic activity.

The  Lontar of Mengwi  informs us that I Gusti Agung Putu as the founder of Mengwi kingdom set up on the edge of Lake Beratan Temple. This kingdom was set up before the Temple of Taman Ayun built but we don’t know when it done exactly is. is not mentioned when he erect Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, but the codex tells us the Temple of Taman Ayun building process held on the day of “Anggara Kliwon Medangsia” in the year of “Saka Sad Bhuta Yaksa Dewa”   that is in 1556 caka or 1634 Common Era. Based on the description in the Lontar of Mengwi , it is known that the Temple Ulun Danu Beratan  erected before the Caka year 1556, by I Gusti Agung Putu. Since the estabilshement of the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, the Kingdom of Mengwi was getting well-known.  I Gusti Agung Putu got an award by the people as "I Gusti Agung Sakti". 

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan temple complex consists of 4, namely:
1. The Temple of Lingga Petak
2. The Temple of Penataran Puncak Mangu
3. The Temple of Terate Bang
4. The Temple of Dalem Purwa

They are functional prototype to adore glory of God in its manifestation as Dewa Tri Murti, use the award to apply for fertility, prosperity, human welfare and sustainable universe.
